Heaven Scent

I think one of the most beautiful, natural fragrances God has given us, is the scent of roses. When their perfume is described by the expert Rosarians, you will hear descriptions such as spicy, musky, fruity, or sweet.

Typically, the Hybrid Tea roses are known for the strongest fragrances; however, there are a few others you shouldn’t miss. The Antique, Old Fashioned and Austins have a slightly softer perfume, but are definitely worth a sniff.

We invite you to come by Daylily Hill to enjoy the beauty and perfume of our roses. Now, is the perfect time to pause and breathe in their glorious scents.

Here are just a few you might like …

Rose Arbors- A Tunnel of Love

When I encounter a beautiful rose arbor, it just captures my heart! Springtime and summer, when they burst with blossoms, is the perfect time to enjoy them. Last week I saw a row of arbors, at a shopping center covered with white Lady Banks roses and it looked enchanting. Years ago, I remember an arbor at Roger’s Gardens in Newport Beach that led to the garden room. It was covered with Sally Holmes climbers…so beautiful!

Arbors covered with blooming roses are so inviting. I remember driving through an old neighborhood in Escondido a few years ago and I just had to stop when I came to an entry gate with an arbor covered in pink roses. I can’t think of anything more welcoming than to walk through that little gate with an arching roof of roses overhead.

I like arbors made of metal or wood. Of course, the wood would need painting from time to time, but there is something more classic…or romantic about a wood arbor. I suppose that painting that arbor could be considered a labor of love. The metal ones are nice too…and strong, needing no maintenance at all. I’ve seen photos of arbors made with a bench underneath…how great would that be!!! At our home in Huntington Beach we had a rose arbor in the backyard, and my daughter made us a bench to sit beneath it- Perfect!!!

I think every dream garden should have at least one beautiful rose arbor, don’t you?!

BRIGHTEN YOUR DAY
Nicole
This feminine looking rose forms clusters of white blossoms edged in HOT PINK with an added touch of golden stamens in the center. Approx. 5 'tall by 4' wide. Vigorous, elegant, disease-free.

CLASSIC WHITE
I don’t know why every time I pass a landscape full of Iceberg Roses it takes my breath away, but it always does! Its Snowy White color sparkles like a winter wonderland all year long with flower power that never ends. Dark green foliage only adds to the beauty of this 5 foot tall floribunda. A spectacular choice for all white gardens, or a perfect contrast for brilliant colors. It may get some mildew along the coast, but I’ve seen some “Powerfully pretty” Icebergs as I’ve walked past gardens in Corona Del Mar, and that’s right on the coast!

LET THE SUN SHINE IN
Sunsprite is one of the world's top ten roses, and the best yellow we've ever seen! It has long lasting, deep yellow, medium-sized, double blossoms, and is contrasted by its glossy, dark green leaves. Rounded, bushy growing to 4' tall and disease resistant. It flowers year-round. Strong fragrance.

Let’s Talk Roses

Roses just may be the most admired, most grown, most loved flowers I can think of...

They make a beautiful bouquet.
Their perfume is unmistakable.

Roses come in all colors, shapes and sizes, but there is no mistake about their impact in the garden or landscape. When they are blooming, they can steal the show!

Many believe that they need too much special care, but they just might surprise you. Given a little water, sunshine, fertilizer and general pruning, and they can be drought tolerant, and tough to beat!

Roses are versatile. They mingle nicely with their neighbors, or they can make a beautiful barricade as a dependable hedge. Some varieties are just made to be the center of attention with flashy colors and large blossoms, while others whisper the language of soft pastels.

Rose petals are sprinkled down the isle at weddings…
They are held by a bride.

The rose speaks of love…
And is a symbol of both beginnings…and final good-byes.
The Rose is found in the midst of celebrations!

Roses can give a voice to…
“Thank You”, “I’m sorry”, “forgive me”, “Happy Anniversary”, “I miss you”, or “Congratulations”.

A rose in the garden is like a spring day all year long. It shouts out life, love, laughter, joy.

Roses are hard workers in the landscape demanding little and giving a lot!

The Power of Roses

Roses are very versatile in the landscape. They can present a very formal appearance when used in geometric patterns. For instance they may be used along the sides of a walkway, or planted in rows forming a square or rectangle. When used in this manner, you will often times plant a small border hedge around the square or rectangular shape rows of roses forming a “rose garden”. You might find this look near museums or grand estates. Tea roses are often used in this fashion.

However, if you are not looking for such a formal look, roses are great partners for a loose, graceful, more informal design. They compliment grasses, lavender, salvias, Rudbeckia, Shasta daisies, Echinacea, pelargonium nutmeg and pink spice to produce an enchanting cottage garden.

Roses even partner well with a woodland landscape. Sprinkled among junipers and birch, succulents and grasses, leafy Bergenia or other woodsy perennials, the simplicity of a single-petaled rose is stunning in the landscape.

In a Mediterranean setting, the brilliant colored roses are often the jewels that sparkle and shine nearly year round. Picture a climbing, or shrub rose in brilliant red, gold, or orange setting off the architecture of stucco and tile.

The rose is so easy to get along with, giving you countless colors, shapes, personalities, and heights to choose from that you just can’t lose. So, as you fit together the pieces of your landscape, don’t forget the power of a rose.

Anyone for Tea…Roses?

My (Jackie) mother loved roses…in particular Tea Roses! She had a rose garden and loved to cut the roses and bring them into the house. As is often the case, I find that I too love to cut roses and bring their beauty and fragrance into our home. Here are a few things I’ve noted about Tea Roses:

Tea roses are usually the best for bouquets.
Tea roses seem to have the largest blossoms.
Teas look the worst in winter.
Teas often have more fragrance than other roses.

I thought I’d share five of my favorite Tea Rose choices with you. These are not in any particular order, but I’ll share with you why I like them as we go from rose to rose.

Sutter’s Gold
Words like…Warm, yummy, and happy come to mind when I “behold” this classic tea! Can a rose make you feel good? YES! I’d say this one does. Need a cure for the blues?… plant a few of these to bring into your world. They’re practically guaranteed to brighten your day.

* Note: Planting any or all of the proceeding roses for a dear loved one makes a great Mother’s Day, Easter, or Birthday gift!

Rina Hugo
I have to admire this heavy duty bloomer! Most of the year, this dependable tea, works overtime to beautify our nursery. Its bright, eye catching, magenta pink is gorgeous!

Silver Star
This one is another great color - a strong, not wimpy lavender! It looks feminine, and has a nice fragrance. As I look at this beautiful Grandiflora, I hope someone named it in honor of a very respected, loving grandmother!

Proud Land
The color of this rose is spectacular! It’s a brilliant ruby red with great form and slightly ruffled petals. Plus, I love its name! It reminds me of our flag, our country, Abraham Lincoln, apple pie and baseball.

Timeless Beauties

Old English and Antique roses have a unique charm captivating the beholder. Their ruffles and frills are reminiscent of an old world charm. Artists often attempt to capture their beauty in oil paintings and tapestries. Their perfume makes them quite appealing to cut and bring into your home for bouquets. Tea kettles and putter pitchers often make wonderful containers for your cut flowers. There are countless choices for your garden. Here are just a few available from Daylily Hill.

Abraham Darby

A beautiful English Austin with remarkable color – a pink/apricot blend with large, cupped blooms and fruity fragrance. Shiny, dark green foliage with good resistance to mildew. 6ft. tall by 5 ft. wide or can be grown as a climber.

Irene Watts

Short, neat, and oh so sweet! At approximately 3 ft. by 3 ft., this pink, beauty has fragrant pom-poms that neatly drop old petals as flowers age. This is a French rose, technically classified as a China, however, this variety has uncommonly large blossoms for most China roses. It’s just amazing to see so many petals stuffed into these beautiful blossoms!

Tamora

Tamora Compact in size, about 4 ft. tall by 3 ft. wide, this English Austin is a good choice as a small hedge or to be planted in masse. Produces an abundance of deeply cupped, apricot-pink blossoms with a myrrh fragrance. Yummy!
